October in Portland means one thing: shows! Check out these concerts around the city with some of the best musicians touring today.
Namasenda at Boiler Room
2nd: Sega Bodega with Cecile Believe (Holocene, 21+)
2nd: John Cooper Clarke (Mission Theater, 21+)
3rd: Empress Of (Wonder Ballroom)
3rd: Foxing with From Indian Lakes and The Names of Our Friends (Revolution Hall)
5th: Quasi, Camp Crush, and The Mistons (Mission Theater)
Local legends unite at AMP’s 30th anniversary fundraiser. AMP works with youths experiencing houselessness in the Portland area, providing music and art resources (including through a mentorship program with local musicians and artists). Quasi is the indie rock pair of Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss (Wild Flag, Sleater-Kinney). They’ve been chugging since the ‘90s and have put out some iconic records. This is gonna be a great show for a cause.
5th: Spirit of the Beehive (Wonder Ballroom)
7th: Chanel Beads with Mary Jane Dunphe (Holocene, 21+)
Chanel Beads is coming to Holocene on Monday, October 7th. He has made a name for himself by playing packed shows in lofts and bars around New York's Dimes Square scene, a great match for the club floor of Portland’s Holocene. Touring debut album Your Day Will Come, Chanel Beads plays with pop and experimental rock to a lively result. Some of the top hits off the album include “Police Scanner,” “Idea June,” and “Embarrassed Dog,” the latter in particular matching solid grooves with experimental rock. The album experiments with a wide range of sounds and vocals, so hearing these songs live should be nothing short of interesting. Catch it live, and don’t miss this one.
8th: Tropical Fuck Storm with Michael Beach and Sea Moss (Aladdin)
10th: Show Me the Body with High Vis, Special Interest, BIB, and BEARCAT (the Roseland)
11th: Cassandra Jenkins with Maria BC (The Old Church)
13th: Jeffrey Lewis & the Voltage with Grasping Straws (Show Bar [Revolution Hall], 21+)
After Jeffrey Lewis's intimate performance on campus last winter captured our hearts, this is a great chance to see what he can do with a little more room. The New York musician is also a comic book artist, an element he incorporates into his live show in a multi-sensory experience. Come for a legend at work.
15th: Prince Daddy and the Hyena with Ben Quad, Cliff Diver, and Heart to Gold (Wonder Ballroom, 21+)
18th & 19th: Haley Heynderickx with Lily Breshears (Aladdin)
Haley Heynderickx heads this double-nighter ahead of the release of her new record, Seed of a Seed (out Nov. 1st). Seed’s lead singles, the title track and “Foxglove,” promise the continuation of her folksy roots through the clear-eyed perspective that, hopefully, comes with age. She’s a hometown hero, local legend, and LC fave, all at one of the best professional venues in Portland–and she, of course, continues her deft songwriting.
19th: Unwound with Steel Pole Bath Tub and Clikatat Ikatowi (Revolution Hall, 21+)
20th: Nilüfer Yanya with Angélica Garcia and Lutalo (Wonder Ballroom, 21+)
21st: Bowling for Soup with Makeout and Adam and the Metal Hawks (the Roseland)
It's Bowling for Soup.
23rd: Mdou Moctar with Rosali (Wonder Ballroom)
23rd: Namasenda with Damon R. (Holocene, 21+)
Namasenda plays her first gig in Portland with electrifying dance musician Damon R. She has worked with the likes of A.G. Cook and LIZ, catching the attention of labels including PC Music and Year0001. Namasenda’s infectious electropop music draws from her Swedish punk rock roots, creating something fearless. Check out her 2023 release Ambrosia and hype up your Wednesday.
